AMI sits off the coast of Manatee County, with Tampa Bay to the north and the Gulf of Mexico to the west. Mainland access is via the Manatee Avenue Bridge (SR 64) into Holmes Beach and the Cortez Bridge into Bradenton Beach. The island's year-round population is roughly 5,000, but seasonal and visitor populations swell significantly between November and April.

The character of the island is the product: no chain hotels towering over the shoreline, a strict 3-story height cap that protects sightlines, a free island trolley that runs the full length, and three distinct walkable downtowns in Pine Avenue, the Holmes Beach core, and Bradenton Beach's Bridge Street.

The Three Cities

Anna Maria City sits at the north end. It is the quietest of the three, with the strictest single-family character and the highest concentration of waterfront estates. Pine Avenue is the cultural heart, with locally owned restaurants and shops.

Holmes Beach is the largest of the three and the practical center of island life. It has the deepest mix of housing types, the most amenities, and the gated Key Royale enclave on the bay side. Most island services are located here.

Bradenton Beach sits at the south end, with walkable Bridge Street, the historic pier, and the smallest lot sizes. It has the strongest short-term rental dynamic and a real density of cottages and modern coastal rebuilds.

Schools

Anna Maria Elementary is the only school on the island itself. Older students attend Nolan Middle School and Braden River High School on the mainland, both reached easily via the SR 64 bridge.

What AMI Is Not

AMI is not Naples, not Sarasota proper, and not Longboat Key. There are no high-rise condos, no destination resorts, no big-box retail, and no traditional downtown nightlife. If you are looking for resort-style amenities and gated luxury towers, the next island south (Longboat Key) is a better fit.
